Steven and Tom visit The Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science

By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong

The Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science in Cocoa, Florida is a local treasure that more people should know about and visit. We decided on the spur of the moment to visit one Saturday afternoon. We are so glad that we did.

The Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science "chronicles the history and sciences of Brevard County, Florida and the State of Florida from the Ice Age to the Space Age." There is even a imagination playroom where kids can pretend they are flying a rocket ship or climb stairs to a second story tree house.

The museum is located on three acres and contains meeting space and exhibit rooms. The Trails reside on the 22 acres that border the Museum's location.  There are also trails owned and maintained by the City of Cocoa which are open dusk to dawn seven days a week.  The access gates are opened and closed by a group of City volunteers.  Visitors can wander from a half mile up to two miles through the ecologically-friendly area that includes a bridge over wetlands, inclines over sand dunes and the possibility of viewing Gopher Tortoises, butterflies and lots of Florida plant species.

We thoroughly enjoyed the exhibits about Flagler's Railroad, Giant Ground Sloth, Brevard's One Room School, Indian River Citrus, the Apollo Landing to the Shuttle to the Hubble and hundreds of shells and sea creatures. We also enjoyed an entire room that highlights the Windover Archeological Site where 7000 year old skeletal remains were found.

You can visit The Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science at 2201 Michigan Avenue, Cocoa, Florida 32926. Their phone number is 321-632-1830.
